For the third day of our annual Winter Awareness Week, we are focusing on the benefits of planning ahead.

The Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor Robert Brown, said: “Planning any journey you are about to take can make a huge difference.

“As well as considering the safest route and mode of transport, you should also always consider if the journey is essential.

“If driving is the only option available, make sure you check the latest weather forecast as well as any current or predicted change in conditions.

“Weather changes can happen very quickly so always make sure you are prepared.”

You can use the following methods to check the forecast:

  • local radio or TV stations
  • the Met Office website
  • information is also available from the @Trafficscotland and @bbctravelscot feeds on X, and on the South Lanarkshire Council Bluesky and Facebook accounts
  • alerts are posted on the @SouthLanCouncil account on X

In particular, listen for any severe weather warnings being issued by the Met Office.

Drivers should allow extra time for their journeys to allow for delays and ensure they take with them a snack, something to drink and any medication they might need.

With some people now working from home at times, our winter travel advice will be useful for any journeys outwith the working day and for those times when working in the office.
